SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.13 g, 4 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer pl. 5, 125 (this coin, V57/R86). HGC 2, 1306. Randazzo 283 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with an illustrious pedigree. Very fine.
